Google describes Page Rank
PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.
PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance.

Search Engine Optimization
A variety of methods can increase the prominence of a webpage within the search results. Cross linking between pages of the same website to provide more links to most important pages may improve its visibility. Writing content that includes frequently searched keyword phrase, so as to be relevant to a wide variety of search queries will tend to increase traffic. Updating content so as to keep search engines crawling back frequently and give additional weight to your site. Adding relevant keywords to a web pages meta data, including the title tag and meta description, will tend to improve the relevancy of a site's search listings, thus increasing traffic. URL normalization of web pages accessible via multiple urls, using the canonical meta tag or via 301 redirects can help make sure links to different versions of the url all count towards the pages link popularity score.
Search Engines algorithms prefer that web pages files are really descriptive and relevant to the information displayed on the page. For SE to interpret a page properly its best that keywords are used instead of random characters and numbers. Each page should be optimized for a certain keyword or keyword phrases which should also appear in H1 tag but also in the page file name. Since no spaces are accepted in the file name, hyphens and underscores are preferred.
Google SEOGoogle holds over 60% of the total search market. Its algorithm is unique, so ranking on Google carries its own unique considerations. Although there are over 200 criteria Google uses to rank sites, they can be categorized into two main sections: on-site and off-site factors: Google values sites that deliver quality content, relevance, easy navigation and load and an overall user-friendliness to the sites visitors (on-site). However, a sites popularity is heavily weighted when Google ranks sites (off-site). Thus Google was originally designed to rank sites mostly based on the number of inbound links they were receiving from other sites. In other words, the more site A was used as a reference the higher it would rank. Anchored text links used to link to site A are also very important as well as the popularity and the relevance of the site that is referencing site A.

Make sure to give your site and your artwork meaningful titles. When a title is not enough, use the description field and include relevant search terms. Also, writing a blog about your art and surrounding topics is a great way to teach search engines what your site is about.
A proven method to help boost search engine ranking is to link to your site from other websites such as online bulletin boards, discussion forums, social networks, social bookmarking services, etc. Incoming links increase the reputation of your site in the eyes of the search engine and should boost its ranking. Also, search engines are known to decrease the importance of stale content, so update your website as often as you can.
Errors in HTML that cannot be seen by humans can affect your ranking. Error-free HTML also ensures your pages will appear correctly when viewed with any browser - Use the W3C URI Validator to check your markup validity: http://validator.w3.org
Time and Analytics
SEO results do not improve over night, it takes time, but noticeable improvement should occur within 2-6 weeks - Before any SEO modifications are applied, target keyword phrases must be tested so that improvement can be measured. Google Analytics shows how many people are visiting your site, where they come from - geographically and also what search engines and websites they come from, what keywords they are using to find you, and more. There are other alternatives but I recommend Google as they provide an excellent free service and after all they are the king of search engines so we might as well play with them.
